Boris Jackson, son of Sam and Dorothy Jackson, was raised in the Washington Shores neighborhood of Orlando, Florida and graduated from Jones High School. While at Jones High, Boris participated in a variety of varsity sports and played the French horn in the concert and marching bands. Boris earned a scholarship to play college football at Florida A & M University, where he also competed in Indoor Track and Field. Graduating with honors from the School of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Boris’s professional career in the AFL as a Defensive Back coincided with his full time teaching position at Carver Middle School. During this time, had the vision to create a program to showcase his experience and skills preparing football and track athletes for competition and prepare young boys and girls for life by helping bring their purpose to the forefront. Boris started Speed Plus Inc. and worked eight years without earning wages. As a result, Boris was able to see the fruits of his labor when Chris Johnson (Carver Middle School and Olympia High School graduate) was drafted in the 1st Round by the Tennessee Titans in 2008, and Karl Joseph was drafted in the 1st round by the Oakland Raiders in 2016.
Boris’s talents and skills allowed him to help local families by supplying athletes with free haircuts, meals, library cards, school supplies, shoes, and social support. While teaching at Carver Middle, Boris coached defensive backs at Freedom High for three years. Boris later accepted a teaching job at Jones High School where he was named the youngest and first alumni in the school’s history to take over both Varsity Football and Boys Track and Field in the same year. During his short time at Jones, he was awarded the Coach of the Year by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Boris realized that the church ministry was struggling to reach the youth so he used sports performance training as a catalyst to gather athletes and parents to share the Gospel, teach core values, responsibility, accountability, and unity in the community, things he saw Central Florida was missing. With no facilities and no money other than his own, Boris officially incorporated Speed Plus Inc. in 2006.
Speed Plus Inc. was initially a program designed to provide inexpensive training for the inner city students of Orlando, but students from the neighboring city of Apopka, surrounding counties of Volusia, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, and beyond as well as from the states of Texas and Mississippi started attending Speed Plus Sports Camps. Boris has helped develop athletes from football as well as lacrosse, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, track, tennis, and rowing.
News Channel 13 recognized Boris as the Everyday Hero in 2017. Boris has mentored and trained several Division 1 football players from conferences such SEC, ACC, MEAC, and SWAC and programs such as FAMU, Bethune – Cookman , West Virginia, Virginia Tech, East Carolina University, Grambling, Tennessee State, Colorado State, Temple, FAU, FIU, USC, UCF, UF, USF, University of Georgia, Miami, Maryland, Tennessee, NC State, and Louisville. Boris Jackson is currently teaching at Westridge Middle and is a Defensive back Coach for Dr. Phillips High School Class 8A State Champs 2017-2018. Boris’s humblest prayer is to continue to reach out and impact more lives, young and old.
